A Real Train Operation

That's right, this is a real train operation. Not a make-believe attraction. There are no animated characters. No hired actors. No scripts. Just authentic railroaders with great stories to tell. Meet them…

Conductor

Conductor

The Conductor is the "captain" of the train and the person in charge of the crew. When your Conductor comes by to punch tickets, be sure to say "hello!"

Engineer

Engineer

Second in command is the Engineer who is part of the engine crew. He is also the driver of the train and responsible for the safe and efficient handling of the train. If you enjoy a smoother ride, thank the Engineer.

Fireman

The Fireman takes care of the boiler and is part of the engine crew. He shovels coal into the engine's firebox where a steady fire needs to reach and maintain a specific temperature to boil the engine's water that creates the energy that makes the wheels move. It's a dirty, but necessary job.

Brakeman

The Brakeman, who is part of the train crew, connects and disconnects cars with couplings. He also throws switches and performs other duties in the operation of the train.

Red Cap

Red Cap

Red Caps are people who answer questions, direct guests and help everyone to make your visit even more enjoyable.

Farmer

Farmer

While not part of the Strasburg Rail Road staff, the farmer is an integral part of your railroad experience. The farmer is responsible for the beautiful and productive farmland through which you travel.

Livestock

Livestock

At times, they may not look like they're hard at work, but cows graze to produce rich milk. Chickens sit around and lay eggs that we enjoy. Now, the horses and mules look hard at work. They're the motive power that Amish use to operate farm machinery and buggies.
